Enjoying Belize

Belize is best known for its marine environment and aquatic activities. The "Blue Hole" is located about 60 miles off the coast of Belize City and was made most popular when Jacques Cousteau described it as "one of the four must-dive locations on the planet." This dive spot attracts thousands of scuba divers each year. The "Blue Hole" was formed millions of years ago during the last ice age as a dry cave system. It is an almost perfect circle that is over one thousand feet in diameter and more than four hundred feet deep. Inside the large hole you will find stalactites and stalagmites and several different varieties of large sharks. With great depths and vicious sharks located in the "Blue Hole," it proves to be an eventful and memory making dive for any experienced diver.

Fishing is another popular recreational activity that Belize provides. Fishing can be experienced all year long in the beautiful waters of Belize. There are so many different types of fishing waters located in and around Belize that there are infinite numbers of different fish species available for the catch. From the rivers to the lagoons to the reef and the flats there is such an abundance of game fish in Belize. Guided fishing tours are very popular because they allow you to be directed to the best location for the type of fish you may be specifically looking for. The most popular types of fishing include spin, trolling, and fly.

Cave Exploring in Belize

Caving or exploring caves is also a huge attraction in Belize. Belize has the perfect location for the formation of caves. Because many of the caves of Belize are yet to be explored, caving should only be done if you are extremely experienced or if you have an experienced guide. Belize Bird Watching

Birding is another popular activity in Belize. Belize is home to more than 600 identified species of birds. With 66% of its land still forested, an average of five new species of birds is discovered a year here. There are also many national parks that prove to be excellent bird watching opportunities. If you are aware of your surroundings and bring your binoculars you are sure to see about 50 different species of birds on any one bird watching outing.
